Reglan Side Effects

The prescription drug Reglan is prescribed for a number of ailments of the stomach and intestines. However, the Food and Drug Administration has put a black box warning on both the prescription drug Reglan and its generic form. Studies have now linked the prescription drug Reglan with the development of muscle disorders.

Side effects and complications of Reglan

FDA and Reglan Risks

According to the FDA, the risks of Reglan are greatest when the drug is taken for extended periods of time. They also believe that certain groups of the population such as the elderly and children may be at an increased risk of developing complications from the prescription drug Reglan. However, they have not entirely ruled out complications arising in short-term use.

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) and Reglan

Patients who take Reglan may be at an increased risk of developing a condition called tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia is a disorder that impairs certain neurological functions. It can cause a number of symptoms including involuntary movements of the arms, legs, and fingers, facial spasms, lip smacking, puckering or pursing, involuntary tongue movements, rapid eye movements and uncontrolled blinking, and sucking and chewing movements. The condition can be permanent in some cases.

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) and Reglan

The prescription drug Reglan has also been linked to a neurological condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This condition can lead to life-threatening complications in some people. The symptoms of this condition include high fever, muscle rigidity, agitation, confusion, blood pressure instability, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, muscle tremors, trouble swallowing, trouble speaking, and an elevation in CPK in blood work.

Dystonia and Reglan

Another serious risk associated with Reglan use includes a neurological condition called dystonia. Dystonia is characterized by constant muscle contractions that can lead to repetitive movements and disfigurement. The symptoms of this condition include twisting or bending of the body, cramping and pain in areas affected by muscle contractors, spasms, loss of coordination, inability to eat, inability to sleep, difficulty swallowing, rapid blinking, and eye squinting.
