Dangerous Symptoms of Shoulder Pain Pumps

Pain pumps are devices that are designed to deliver controlled doses of pain medication through a catheter directly to the shoulder. The devices are typically inserted after surgery is performed on the shoulder. The intent is to remove the need for oral prescription pain killers. Because of their perceived benefits, many patients choose to have the pain pumps surgically implanted. However, several doctors and medical researchers allege that the pain pumps actually do more harm than good in a lot of patients.

Shoulder pain pumps have caused troubling symptoms in patients

Cartilage Damage

Recent studies have linked the use of shoulder pain pumps to Post-arthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL). PAGCL is a serious condition in which the shoulder joints deteriorate, leaving severe shoulder movement limitations in post-arthroscopic shoulder surgery patients. The injury is characterized by a disintegration of the cartilage surrounding the shoulder joint area. The cartilage deterioration can be caused by sustained exposure to anesthetics from a pain pump. The loss of this protective cartilage, which prevents bone from rubbing against bone, normally results in a marked weakness of the afflicted joint, constant pain whether at rest or in motion, diminished range of motion, and clicking, grinding, or popping sounds when the arm moves.

Symptoms of Cartilage Damage

PAGCL is extremely painful and can cause life-long disability. Symptoms of PAGCL include:

  • Pain when shoulder is in motion or at rest
  • Shoulder stiffness
  • Popping or grinding when shoulder is in motion
  • Decrease in range of motion
  • A loss of strength in the joint

Consult a Lawyer

If you or a loved one has developed cartilage damage or PAGCL following arthroscopic surgery, you should contact an attorney to find out whether you are eligible for compensation for your injuries.
